Kolkata Mayor has issued a plea to residents, urging them not to construct illegal houses. In response, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will install hoardings across the city, detailing information about the Banglar Bari housing scheme. Additionally, KMC will investigate rooftop restaurants and hotels to ensure they have adequate rescue spaces, without which permissions will be difficult to grant. The inquiry is part of a broader safety initiative following the AMRI incident, where permission granted by the previous CPM government led to a tragic fire killing 99 people. The land, initially given to AMRI for ₹1, has now been sold to Manipal by AMRI.
Street dogs have become a growing concern in Kolkata, with their numbers increasing significantly. The corporation is addressing the issue amid debates over the ethics of feeding stray dogs and posting about it on social media.
